Spring begins

Spring is in full bloom in Hinton and everything is looking great. Crews are hard at work to get the pool open with the all new changing rooms and showers inside. The grounds are beginning to take shape and last month Council authorized us to install a new basketball court on the adjacent empty lot. The court will be paved and ready to use about mid June. The Concession stand at the park is all new and will offer new menu items like popcorn and hotdogs along with ice cream. These along with pizza, nachos, candy, chips and snow cones will allow our customers to stay longer and enjoy the pool and slide. The park is finally fully handicap accessible with the new ramps installed and the ramp that is in the pool. If you happen to come down this weekend please excuse the mess as we are still working on the building. We have new hours on the park also so parents will able to come down after work. The park will be open from 11-7 on Monday and on Wednesday thru Saturday. Sunday Hours are 1-6 and Tuesday is private party day. Private parties are very popular and can also be held after hours.

Christmas Parade

The City of Hinton is planning its next big event. The Annual Christmas Parade is sure to be a hit again as it seems to grow this year. The start time has been changed to 5:30 to allow for people to decorate their floats with Christmas lights. Last year it snowed during the parade and it was beautiful. The Spirit of Hinton Award winner Lonnie Mullins will be the Grand Marshall. Lonnie has been county commissioner for many years and owned and operated WMTD radio in Hinton back when I was growing up here. Our Snow Queen Kelsie Lively will be in the parade with her grandmother Martha Morgan who was Queen in 1962. There will also be our special guests the Summers County Lady Bobcats Volleyball team who just won the State Championships. There will be a Christmas bazaar and reception at the Hinton Technology Center before the parade to honor our special guests.
The annual holiday lighting contest begins this week with judging to happen around Christmas week. The winners will be announced the first week in January.

Summer Heat

The summer heat has been the worst in recent memory so it is a good thing the new pool is up and running. The pool has been very busy since opening on July 2nd. I happened to be down there this weekend and counted 38 cars in the parking lot which is amazing. The City has also spent alot of money in painting and cleaning up the waterslide and the grounds are in excellent shape considering all of the construction this summer.

The Water Festival starts this week and the committee has a week long schedule of events for us to enjoy and participate in. I always enjoy the parades and normally attend the car show to look at all of the fantastic vehicles from the area. The queens coronation is being held at the newly restored Ritz Theater this year which should make for a great oppertunity for people who havent yet seen the amazing work that they put into that building.

June in Hinton

June in Hinton is a wonderful time. The weather is sunny with rain here and there. The fish are biting. The kids are at the ball park or the 4Hcamp. The golf courses are full and the wildlife is everywhere. Small town life is at its peak in the summer when the kids are out of school. If you are in town with the kids stop by the little league park and check out the new playground installed by the Corps by the Bluestone Dam and Bring your fishing pole while the kids enjoy the new equipment. If you get hungry a great place to eat is across the river at Kirks with their patio over looking the New River. I just ate there last night and the sound of the river was so relaxing it made my food all that more enjoyable.

For those of you with access to local cable we are trying to keep local events updated as best we can on channel 22.
The City waterslide is scheduled to be open the first weekend in June with the pool opening the following weekend. The park will be open to the public 12-5 Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Sunday hours are 1-6 and Tuesday is a private party day only. Please contact the park manager at 466-1600 or 573-2968 for party availability. Entry fees to the park are $5.00 for all day and kids 4 and under are free with a paying adult. Our pool will be the only heated outdoor public pool in the area so come down and check out the first year of swimming in Hinton.
